My Top 3 Key Events of Things Fall Apart
1. When Okonkwo beheads the messenger: This is a very important moment in terms of Okonkwo's character. Throughout the novel, we see him deal with a lot of internal conflict, which is then amplified when he returns from his exile to see that his village has changed tremendously and has been taken over by the British. After his arrival, his internal conflict builds up more and more, until it finally reaches the climax, and he kills the messenger. 2. Okonkwo kills Ikemefuna: This event foreshadows Okonkwo's eventual downfall, and acts as a turning point in the story. During the event, Ikemefuna calls Okonkwo his "father", showcasing how strong the relationship they have formed is. Okonkwo is forced to kill Ikemefuna out of fear that he will be considered weak if he does not do so, and this act leaves a huge emotional scar in him. 3. Okonkwo hangs himself: After he beheads the messenger, the villagers decide not to defend Okonkwo from the British, another example...
I liked the structure of your a's analysis, as you kept a steady pace, analyzing each passage chronologically. You continuously used Hurston effect or purpose through each point, which strengthened your communication in the understanding of the novel. You also related events, such as Nanny's rape to the context of Nanny's position now. You also approached future events that are related to the passage which was good. You didn't do too much, which was effective in being concise and organized. However, you were a bit repetitive in your analysis. To improve, I would look more into the characterization of each character and how this passage also serves its purpose in further developing the character of Janie and Nanny. Overall, great practice IOC.
ReplyDeleteTomas this was a good effort in attempting a practice IOC. It is certain from your IOC that you have very good knowledge and understanding of the passage. Furthermore your comments are supported by references which are very well organized and somewhat coherent. There was an adequate understanding of of the use and effect of literary features but there wasn't enough information about how those effects impacted the reader. Finally there could be more of a variety of style words and literary devices (i.e metaphor, imagery etc.)
